Social Security Mallorca & Health Insurance Card
Spain has a public healthcare system, which is managed by the Seguridad Social in Mallorca. With the Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual, the SIP card, you also get access to the public system. This includes, for example, doctor visits, hospital stays and medication.
The key basics
Before you register, you should know a few rules.
- You are entitled through employment or self-employment, for which you need the social security number NUSS/NAF
- Pensioners from the EU can also be insured
- Emergency care in Mallorca, on the other hand, is free for everyone, regardless of insurance status
- You can also co-insure children through the parents as Beneficiarios
- For certain medications, however, a small co-payment (copago) applies
Apply for the Tarjeta Sanitaria in Mallorca
You normally apply for the card at the Centro de Salud in your place of residence. For this you present these documents:

- Empadronamiento (registration certificate)

What is the NUSS?
The NUSS is your personal social security number. With it, you are admitted to the system.
Do I need health insurance for the Residencia?
Yes, health insurance is mandatory in Spain. It can be private or public. We also help you choose a private health insurance.
Where do I apply for the Tarjeta Sanitaria?
You apply for it at the responsible Centro de Salud of your municipality. Alternatively, you can do it online with our service.
Is the Tarjeta Sanitaria also valid outside Spain?
No, because for that you need the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
