Do you want to live, work or start a business in Spain? Then you first need to apply for your NIE number. The Número de Identidad de Extranjero is your personal identification and tax number in Spain, and almost nothing works without it. Apply for a NIE number: what you need it for
In everyday life in Spain, you come across the NIE constantly. For example, you need it for:
- Employment contracts and other contracts you sign
- A bank account and paying bills
- Buying or registering a car
- Buying or renting a property
- The Residencia (small green card), for which it is a prerequisite
Fortunately, you only apply for the NIE once, because it is valid for life. However, it does not replace the Residencia, since the NIE is only the number. Registering as a resident is a separate step, which we also handle for you.
Four options for your application
If you want to apply for a NIE number, you can choose between four options. Which one fits depends on whether you are already in Mallorca and how much you want to do yourself.
“In person”
You go to the office alone, and we take care of the rest. We book the appointment, prepare the forms and pay the application fees. You then receive your NIE directly at the appointment.
“Together”
We accompany you to the office. The package is the same as “In person”, and in addition we are by your side at the appointment.
“Hassle-free”
You give us a power of attorney at the notary on site, and we handle the trips to the authorities. Alternatively, an online power of attorney is possible. You then receive your NIE as a PDF by email.
“With power of attorney”
Are you still abroad or don’t want to travel? Then you obtain the power of attorney with apostille, either in Mallorca or conveniently from home via the online process. We handle the rest.

The documents you need
If you want to apply for a NIE number, only a few documents are needed. However, the authorities work differently in the details, so we clarify with you in advance exactly which ones are required.
- A valid passport or ID card
- The completed application form EX-15, which we prepare for you
- Proof of the paid application fee (Modelo 790, Código 012), which we pay for you
- The reason why you need the NIE, such as a property purchase, employment contract or bank account

FAQ: applying for a NIE number in Mallorca
How long does it take to get a NIE number in Mallorca?
That depends on the authority and the appointment situation, as free appointments are often scarce. You will find the current waiting times for each option in the overview above. With us you also save time, because we know the processes and take care of getting the appointment.
Can I apply for the NIE from abroad?
Yes, you can apply for a NIE number without being on site. The most convenient way, however, is with a power of attorney that you obtain abroad or online. We then take care of the trips to the authorities so that everything runs smoothly.
Does the NIE number expire?
No. Once applied for, the NIE is valid for life, so you never have to renew it.
How much does it cost to apply for a NIE number?

What is the difference between NIE and Residencia?
The NIE is your identification and tax number. The Residencia, on the other hand, is the registration as a resident, and it requires the NIE. That is why you need the NIE first.
Do I need the NIE to buy a property?
Yes. Without a NIE you cannot buy a property in Spain, because the notary and the land registry require it. It is also often requested for rental contracts and utility providers.
